Company History
Rio Grande Steel, LTD. was founded on April 1,1991 by Hector M. Maldonado
Mr. Maldonado had started his career in the steel business exactly 28 years earlier working with Palmer Steel & Supplies, Inc., as a shop helper. When Palmer Steel decided to close their rebar division in early 1991, Mr. Maldonado seized the opportunity to start out on his own.
Today, Rio Grande Steel Ltd., owned by Mr. Maldonado and his wife Criselda, employs over 100 people, has over 120,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space, and over 7,500 sq. ft. of showroom and office space in three locations. While the company has grown and diversified through it's 14 year history, the fabrication of reinforcing steel remains it's backbone and specialty.
The company has it's own in-house detailing and estimating department. The fabrication department now fabricates in excess of 2,500 tons of rebar per month. The company boasts two partially automated shear lines, each capable of cutting rebar up to 60' long. Our shop counts with three fully automated stirrup making machines.
Along with these machines, and four benders the company counts with the only machines capable of producing radius bars and spiral rebar south of San Antonio. Increasing the productivity of the fabrication shop, Rio Grande Steel recently added a fully automated "Barwiser" system.
The company owns and operates it's own fleet of tractor-trailer combinations and hires professional drivers to ensure that the products which it sells are delivered on a timely manner. The company also has a fleet of bobtail trucks to handle it's smaller deliveries.
